There are three main newsletter formats. Each format has its advantages and disadvantages. The text newsletter is still the most popular format because it is easy to make and compatible with all sorts of email clients and services. PDF newsletters are also common but not as numerous as the other two formats. HTML newsletters are increasingly growing in popularity because they provide dozens of options and features. HTML enables the newsletter designer to change colors, add photos, insert links, switch fonts, add tables and customize the whole newsletter layout. But this by no means suggests that HTML newsletters are perfect and have no cons. The main disadvantage of HTML is its incompatibility with several email clients. It is true that probably all the major email service providers support HTML, however, there are several small ones which do not or at least not fully support it. When designing your newsletter, it is recommended that you make scarce use of graphics and the rich editing features of HTML because this will distract your readers and make your newsletter slow to load.

Which format to use depends mainly on what you are looking for. Each format is suitable for one specific purpose but there is no format which can serve all purposes.
